Curonian Spit Festival 2018
The first Curonian Spit International Chamber Music Summer Festival was held in Neringa on the initiative of Prof. Algirdas Vizgirda in August 1999. Since then it has become an important milestone in the region’s cultural development. The festival was conceived as a joint initiative of the Lithuanian National Philharmonic, Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, Neringa Municipality, and Algirdas Vizgirda, artistic director and conductor of the Musica Humana Ensemble.
The principal aim of the Curonian Spit Festival is to present the most outstanding musical masterpieces of the past and contemporary works by composers from the Baltic region during the peak of summer holiday season in Lithuania’s seaside resorts, which is closely aligned with the Lithuanian cultural policy in the field of national regional development.
The Musica Humana Ensemble of the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society, under the artistic leadership of Prof. Algirdas Vizgirda, has been the festival’s resident company ever since its inception. In its annual programmes, the festival also features renowned Lithuanian and foreign soloists, ensembles and choirs. Exquisite musical performances given by the finest musicians in the pristine setting of Neringa unchangeably draw favourable critical response and crowded halls.
“Neringa, a charming strip of land formed by the forces of nature, has always been and, I believe, will remain a place of attraction for musicians, painters, sculptors, architects, writers, and poets. This remarkably unique spit that separates the Curonian lagoon from the Baltic Sea has a truly magnetic pull, as if it were a channel of some transcendental energy that brings us closer to Eternity. The musical art of the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque eras, as well as Classicism, Romanticism, Impressionism and Modernism in all its current transformations also brings us closer to eternity and kindles an unquenchable thirst for perfection and joy of creation. I wish every one of us continue walking the path of life together, with our hearts lifted up, full of love, respect and goodwill for each other. Let an old Christian motto ‘Sursum corda!’ – ‘Lift up our hearts!’ – be the slogan of the 18th Curonian Spit International Chamber Music Summer Festival,” says Professor Algirdas Vizgirda, the festival’s artistic director and conductor.
