ALFRED SCHNITTKE – Faust Cantata
PIOTR TCHAIKOVSKY – Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74 (Pathetic)
The Lithuanian Philharmonic stage hosts an impressive performing forces – Maestro Robertas Šervenikas leads Mindaugas Zimkus and Tadas Girininkas, the soloists with the Lithuanian Opera and Ballet Theatre, Evelina Sašenko, a Lithuanian pop and jazz rising star, Russell Harcourt, a prodigious countertenor from the UK, organist Vidas Pinkevičius and Kaunas State Choir. The musicians present Alfred Schnittke’s monumental Faust Cantata composed in 1983. The composer incorporated its music in Historia von D. Johann Fausten, an opera he completed in 1994. The cantata gained popularity due to an outlandish element in academic music vocabulary – the Devil’s miked tango in which he mocks at Faust’s brutal death. This episode was included in the third act of Schnittke’s upcoming opera.
After intermission the LNSO will perform Tchaikovsky’s last, so called autobiographical, symphony. "Without exaggeration I have put my whole soul into this symphony… As far as I am concerned, I am prouder of it than of any of my previous works”, wrote the Russian composer.
