JOHANNES BRAHMS – Quartet in A minor, Op. 51 No. 2
FELIX MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY – Quartet No. 3 in D major, Op. 44 No. 1

On this Sunday afternoon the Vilnius String Quartet presents string quartets by Johannes Brahms and Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. Written alongside his large-scale works during the most productive years, the chamber music opuses were Brahms’ isles of repose and reviving. According to Brahms, the chamber music prompts the formation and maturity of the artistic identity. “The difficulty lies not in composition, but in taking the unnecessary notes out!” Brahms reportedly destroyed some twenty string quartets before allowing three quartets, among them Op. 51 No. 2, to be published.

Mendelssohn-Bartholdy has excelled in string quartet genre writing six works for this ensemble. String quartet in D major, Op. 44 No. 1 is part of the Op. 44 set of 3 string quartets that he dedicated to the Crown Prince of Sweden. The Mendelssohn scholars regard the three quartets as the masterpieces of the quartet genre.
