Trio “Agora” – Conflux of Identity

Works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Sergei Rachmaninov, Joel Hoffman, Algirdas Klova, Jonas Jurkūnas, Mykolas Natalevičius, Juta Pranulytė

Agora Trio formed in 2015 and the following year made its debut in Festival Jong Talent in the Netherlands. Since then, trio gave concerts in Germany, Belgium, Italy and Lithuania. The name Agora was chosen not by accident. In ancient Greek city-states the agora was a central public space, the meeting place of the city dwellers. For members of the trio agora is both their ensemble and Lubeck, German city that they feel is their adopted home – the place where Berlin (Germany) resident Žilvinas Brazauskas, Brussels (Belgium) resident Natania Hoffman and Glasgow (Great Britain) resident Robertas Lozinskis, the first prize winner of Čiurlionis International Piano Competition 2015, meet.

In 2017, sponsored by patrons – Quandt family, the trio released debut CD, Youth, featuring arrangements of the works originally written for other instrumental ensembles, and thus expanding the repertoire for clarinet, cello and piano. Some of them will be performed in the first half of the concert the climax of which will be Beethoven’s renowned Gassenhauer trio. After intermission the trio will salute the centenary of the Restoration of the State of Lithuania with new works by Joel Hoffman, Algirdas Klova, Jonas Jurkūnas, Mykolas Natalevičius and Juta Pranulytė. These compositions metaphorically reveal most diverse themes and sonorities: the suffering of political prisoners, builders of utopic railway in the far North of Russia (Natalevičius), the signs of matriarchal Lithuanian culture (Pranulytė), the beauty of Lithuanian sutartinė (Hoffman) and the playfulness of the composition constructed on the principle of “audio doodle” (Jurkūnas). The trio closely collaborates with composer Hoffman, whose compositions – embodying tender dedication to the incredible world of Lithuanian sutartinė and its synthesis with the composer’s musical vocabulary – will open and close the trio’s unique programme.
