In 2019, we celebrate the centenary of Eduardas Balsys (1919–1984), the coryphée of Lithuanian music. This evening the musicians present his compositions linked by the theme of the sea. The grandeur of the sea was one of the leading inspirations for his music; its image permeates almost every genre the composer expressed himself in. With his own family he used to spend summer vacations in his parental home in Palanga, where he produced many of his compositions. Tonight’s programme includes two symphonic compositions on a theme of the sea: Reflections of the Sea for string orchestra and fragment from the ballet Eglė, Queen of the Grass-snakes. Furthermore, his Dramatic Frescoes will feature his granddaughter pianist Indrė Baikštytė and Džeraldas Bidva, the first violin of the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra.

The musical feast will be enhanced with Prokofiev, Lutosławski and Britten’s variations, inserted between Balsys’ colourful scores representing the peaks of his third period. “Music is the art of emotions, therefore they should be our prime concern”, the composer used to say.
