Christmas and New Year celebrations are inseparable from the annual concerts of the State Wind Instrument Orchestra Trimitas at the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Hall. This time, the orchestra presents not only a new programme encrusted with cheerful masterpieces, but also an almost unknown instrument – the theremin.

It is one of the most peculiar musical instruments. It consists of two metal antennas that generate electromagnetic fields and two radio frequency generators. With finger movements between two antennas, electrical impulses are amplified and transmitted to the speaker. Interestingly, this instrument was constructed in 1920 by Leon Theremin, an inventor and future USSR spy. His intent was not a musical instrument, but a device that could measure the density of gas. It turned out that by bringing your hand closer to the meter, you can produce a wide variety of sounds. In 1928, Theremin introduced his invention in New York and caused a great stir (although not commercially successful). Theremin was later forgotten until it was first used by Hollywood makers for horror movie soundtracks in the 1950s. Later The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Beach Boys, and Jean-Michelle Jarre used it in their recordings. The instrument was reborn when Robert Moog, inspired by Theremin, created his legendary namesake synthesizer.

This unusual device will be handled by Katica Illényi, a virtuoso, violinist and vocalist from Hungary, who has equally mastered the genres of classical, jazz and world music.

A recipient of Hungary’s Outstanding Artist Award, eMeRTon Award (Hungarian National Radio) and Franz Liszt Award among other insignias, she is performing around the world. Her discography amounts to twenty albums.
