To mark the 90th anniversary of Mstislav Rostropovich

2017 March 25, Saturday, 19.00
Lithuanian National Philharmonic Hall, Vilnius
To mark the 90th anniversary of Mstislav Rostropovich

DMITRY SHOSTAKOVICH – Concerto for violin and orchestra No. 1 in A minor, Op. 77
SERGEI PROKOFIEV – Symphony No. 5 in B flat major, Op. 100

The Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society and musicians dedicate this concert to the memory of Mstislav Rostropovich (1927–2007), a long-time friend and like-minded colleague, the legendary cellist and conductor, world-renowned musician and humanist. On March 27th he would have celebrated his 90th anniversary, and on April 27th we will mark his 10th death-anniversary.

Rostropovich has once said: “Anything associated with Lithuania is dear to me”. In 1992, Maestro was decorated with the January 13 Commemorative Medal, in 1995 – the Commander’s Grand Cross of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas. He can deservedly be called the Godfather of the Vilnius Festival, as he was at the podium when the Festival was launched with the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre production of Romeo and Juliet on June 2, 1997. In 2000, he was endowed with the Citizenship of honour of Vilnius. In 2003, on his initiative the Mstislav Rostropovich Charity and Support Foundation “Support for the Children of Lithuania” was established.

The performers of tonight’s concert, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, soloist Sergej Krylov and conductor Robertas Šervenikas, had a special bond with Rostropovich. They shared many a significant creative endeavour. By the way, Maestro named Krylov one of the world’s best violinists.

Tonight’s concert programs works by Shostakovich and Prokofiev not by coincidence. Rostropovich especially admired the two composers, knew them personally, and performed many of their works. The music community of the world knows the recording of Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony made in 1988: then Maestro conducted the Orchestre national de France
