Vilnius State Choir, one of the most renowned and seasoned professional choirs in Lithuania, celebrates its 50th creative anniversary. The Choir champions Lithuanian culture by promulgating sacred music of various genres and forms, initiating and presenting premieres of new works, national choral music, and building new cultural bridges.

In order to highlight and emphasise the Choir’s mission as an ambassador of Lithuanian music, the jubilee concert will feature works by V. Miškinis, V. Augustinas and D. Zakaras, as well as L. Rimša’s Jazz Mass.

In the first half of the concert Vytautas Miškinis’ Neišeik, saulala (Don’t Leave Me, Sun) epitomises the spirit and language of Lithuanian folklore. Vaclovas Augustinas’ Great Art Thou, O Lord, an extremely delicate and masterful opus unfolding like a flower, will not leave an indifferent listener. The first half of the concert will end with Donatas Zakaras’ Magnificat, the work of magnificent beauty, serene lyrics and transparent texture.

The concert’s second half will offer the world premiere of Linas Rimša’s Jazz Mass dedicated to the creative anniversary of Vilnius Choir. It is a five-movement (KyrieGloriaCredoSanctus and Agnus Dei) sacred cycle for mixed choir and big band. The idea to write a modern Lithuanian Mass, combining classical elements with an innovative approach to this genre, originated a long time ago. It was worked on and polished for more than a year. Via modern means, relief melodies, harmony and swift rhythmic twists, the composer imbues traditional sacred mass with novel qualities.

In this jubilee concert, two powerful collectives – the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra (artistic director and conductor S. Krylov) and Lithuanian Jjazz Ensemble (artistic directors Jievaras Jasinskis, Liutauras Janušaitis) will demonstrate the synthesis of different musical forms.
