ERNEST CHAUSSON – Poème de l’amour et de la mer (Poem of Love and the Sea) for tenor and orchestra, Op. 19 (lyrics by Maurice Bouchor and anonym)
CÉSAR FRANCK – Symphony in D minor

This concert is a real musical treat for the most discerning listeners, as the Lithuanian tenor Edgaras Montvidas, a London resident who has fascinated world opera theatres, is on stage. Celebrating his 20th creative anniversary this year, the opera soloist gives a variety of concerts in his native Lithuania, showcasing his vast talent in a wide-range repertoire spanning from subtle chamber music to large-scale vocal-symphonic opuses.

Today Montvidas enjoys invitations to appear at major world opera theatres. List of his performances includes major European theatres and festivals: the national opera theatres of England and Scotland, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, national opera theatres of Cincinnati, Santa Fe, Amsterdam, Geneva, Frankfurt, Leipzig, Riga, Lyon, Bordeaux, Lorraine, Opera Comique in Paris, Komische Oper in Berlin, La Monnaie in Brussels, Semperoper in Dresden, Bavarian State Opera in Munich, as well as Aix-en-Provence, BBC Proms and Glyndebourne festivals and many more notable world scenes. His recent roles include Werther at the Bergen National Opera, Boris in Janaček’s Káťa Kabanová at the Hamburg Opera, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly at Nancy Opera, and also debuts at the Zurich Opera, Milan’s La Scala, Bregenzer Festspiele and Vienna Theatre. Montvidas is also active on concert scene. Recent performances include European tour with Verdi’s Requiem under the baton of Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Szymanowski’s Harnasie with the London Symphony Orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle, appearances with the London Symphony Orchestra and François-Xavier Roth (Ravel’s L'heure espagnole), the French Philharmonic Orchestra Les Siècles (Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9), the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Thomas Ades (Stravinsky’s Perséphone), and performance of Berlioz’s La damnation de Faust with the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra and Maestro Gintaras Rinkevičius in Lithuania.

Tonight, Montvidas presents French music – Ernest Chausson’s song cycle Poème de l'amour et de la mer. This opus enchants with its poetic character, which, not only in words but also in sounds, expresses the images that inspired the composer – delicate lilacs, the blue of the sea and sky, falling leaves blown by the wind, moonlight and the air saturated with the aroma of blossoms. In fact, it is a symbolist composition – through associations of sounds and images of nature Chausson portrays a man’s world, his feelings and experiences.

Alongside Chausson’s subtle music, the concert offers another French composer César Franck’s monumental symphonic canvas, Symphony in D minor, full of dramatism and conflict.
