Tonight’s concert features the NICO (New Ideas Chamber Orchestra) founded in 2006 by composer and conductor Gediminas Gelgotas. It is a string ensemble musicians of which integrate choreography and acting into performances, thus creating a unique concept of performance that can be called “visualized music”. The NICO has given concerts in such halls as The Roundhouse and the Institute for Contemporary Arts in London, participated in Usedom Musik Festival (Germany), Sacrum non Profanum (Poland), Gaida and Baltic Art Triennial (Lithuania), toured in Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Great Britain, the USA and other countries of the world. In 2013, the NICO’s album Music for Strings was released by the German-American label Peermusic Classical. Terry Riley, an American minimalist star, has expressed admiration for the NICO and G. Gelgotas’ music. The minimalist music occupies an important part in the NICO’s repertoire (Riley, Reich, Glass, Adams, Pärt). Thus, tonight’s programme is akin to a dedication to one of the brightest and most popular trends in contemporary music – minimalism, pulse of which is projected in Gregson’s re-compositions, Reich’s work inspired by the songs of the British rock band Radiohead, and the compositions by the ensemble’s leader Gediminas Gelgotas. The NICO shares the stage with its friends: the Swiss violinist David Nebel (dubbed wunderkind), the Slovak double bassist Roman Patkolo and the members of the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra.
