MODEST MUSSORGSKY – Pictures at an Exhibition (string quintet arrangement by R. Patterson)
Almost a hundred fifty years ago, the famous Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky visited the exhibition of artist Viktor Hartman in St. Petersburg and decided to compose a suite in memory of a friend. The paintings gave impetus to his volatile imagination. This is how the cycle Pictures at an Exhibition was born. Its heroes and images – the gnome, the old castle, the carriage drawn by bulls, unhatched chicken, two Jews, Limoges market, catacombs, the hut on hen’s legs and Baba Yaga, the Bogatyr’s gate – will come alive in this staged concert.
