JOHANNES BRAHMS – String Quartet in C minor, Op. 51 No. 1
CÉZAR FRANCK – Piano quintet in F minor, M. 7

This concert is an extraordinary opportunity to hear again the much-anticipated pianist Lukas Geniušas and the Čiurlionis Quartet, one of the most prominent representatives of the chamber music genre. Tonight the Quartet offers the most outstanding examples of chamber repertoire. The programme features an opus by Alexander Borodin, the famous 19th century Russian composer. He dedicated this opus to his wife Ekaterina. Supposedly, it is a romantic gift for the twentieth anniversary of their acquaintance. The quartet’s third movement, Notturno, conveys the feelings of love most perceptibly. It is one of Borodin’s most wondrous music examples, enchanting with melodious, lush cello and violin melodies, which run against the background of a wavy accompaniment.

Johannes Brahms’ String quartet in C minor is a striking example of a genuine, homogeneous, extremely masterfully monothematically weaved musical canvas, not inferior to the quartets by his greatly admired Beethoven or Haydn. The work was written by the composer during summer holiday near Munich and dedicated to Theodor Billroth, the famous surgeon and music lover, who was one of the first to provide a scientific analysis of musicality.

The highlight of the program is César Franck’s Piano quintet in F minor, performed by the Čiurlionis Quartet and Lukas Geniušas. It is the composer’s late opus, exuding a lyricism inspired by a sincere love for nature. The quintet reflects Franck’s philosophical depth, which is in harmony with the equipoise of emotional and rational (characteristic of the Latin tradition) as well as the subtle finesse and splendour of French music.
