The Great German Romantics

RICHARD WAGNER – Prelude (Introduction) and Liebestod  from the opera Tristan und Isolde
ROBERT SCHUMANN – Concerto for cello and orchestra in A minor, Op. 129
JOHANNES BRAHMS – Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98

Undoubtedly, Giedrė Šlekytė, a Lithuanian conductor of young generation, is the highlight of this concert. In 2016–2017, she was invited to act as the 1st Kapellmeister at the Klagenfurt City Theatre Orchestra. At the time, a thirty-year-old conductor was featured in the foreign press as follows: “The Baltic States surprise us time and again with highly talented and remarkably individual artistic personalities!” Tonight, the conductor shares the stage with cellist Kian Soltani from Iran. “His cello has rich and lush aroma of caramel, while he plays with such an ease and warmth, that the orchestra is drawn by him like a halo around a candle flame,” wrote The Washington Post. Together with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, these musicians present Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto. Written in 1850, this opus belongs to the late period of the composer’s oeuvre. Already suffering from fatal nerve illness, he was not able to compose for weeks and worked feverishly when he felt better. Within six days he made sketches for the Concerto, and in the following eight days completed the score. The soloist plays an important role in this work – the main tension lies in the “inner monologue” of the cello. Tonight’s programme also features Wagner’s sensual and boundlessly passionate music from the opera Tristan und Isolde, and Brahms’ final, Fourth Symphony, one of his most magnificent works, combining nigh on antique beauty and reflections of the harsh realities of life.
