Quartet for the End of Time

OLIVIER MESSIAEN – Quatour pour la fin du temps for violin, clarinet, cello and piano
PAUL HINDEMITH – Quartet for clarinet, violin, cello and piano

The illustrious French composer Olivier Messiaen wrote Quartet for the End of Time in a prisoner-of-war camp in Görlitz, Germany, where he was imprisoned in 1940–1941 as a French soldier. The composer and three other fellow prisoners premiered the quartet at the camp on 15 January 1941… To this day this opus remains one of the most frequently performed compositions worldwide. The quartet creates an aura of exceptional spirituality and emotionality, while its religious content strengthens hope and faith of the humankind.

Hindemith, a renowned German neo-classicist, completed his Quartet for clarinet, violin, cello and piano n 1938. The three-movement opus stands out for its melodiousness, contrasts, polyphonic strands, and intriguing rhythmical modifications. Seldom featured on the concert stage it is considered to be ‘a hard nut to crack’ by performers.

Both challenging music gems of the first half of the 20th century will be performed by Kaskados Trio – Rusnė Mataitytė (violin), Edmundas Kulikauskas (cello) and Albina Šikšniūtė (piano). Active for 20 years this Trio has become an important member of the Lithuanian chamber music scene. In addition to regularly premiering works by contemporary Lithuanian composers, the ensemble has performed monumental cycles of piano trios by Beethoven, Brahms and Schubert. Currently, the Trio is in the process of presenting complete piano trios by Haydn.

Clarinettist Antanas Taločka is a winner of international competitions, a long-time principal clarinet of the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra. As a soloist he has appeared with the LNSO, the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra, Kaunas Chamber Orchestra, Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra, Kremerata Baltica, the Honour Guard Orchestra of Lithuanian Armed Forces, Vilnius String Quartet and Čiurlionis Quartet. He has taken part in classical and contemporary music festivals (Gaida, PažaislisTytuvėnai, Iš arti, Lockenhaus, Schwetzingen, etc.).
