BRONIUS KUTAVIČIUS - Opera Old Man Bones on the Iron Mountain

The opera for children and the whole family The Old Man Bones on the Iron Mountain belongs to the hand of the famous Lithuanian composer Bronius Kutavičius. The authentic and true world of this composer’s music is close to both adult listeners, especially those who feel connected to the old culture of the nation, and children. It is like a fairy tale, barely perceptible, and at the same time packed with widely stretching insight. Externally, Kutavičius’ work is simple for a child to grasp, but that simplicity is as generous as a long-refined folk tradition.

The opera The Old Man Bones on the Iron Mountain is based on the libretto of the poet Sigitas Geda. It is a stylized tale featuring a Sparrow with a Mouse, a Falcon, a Man, Three Old Ladies, Sisters of a Falcon, a Virgin Swan, a Son of Man, an Old Man Bones and more. Conforming to children’s listening capacities the piece is of small-scale. The original score was even intended to be performed by children, but a new version created for this production involves professional performers – chamber orchestra and mixed choir, as well as children’s choir. The clash, harmony and dialogue of the archaic and modern world have determined a suggestive directing and musical decisions in the production of this opera. This interpretation of Kutavičius’ opus leaves a great impression on large and small listeners. The opera was premiered in Klaipėda Concert Hall on April 18th, 2019.
