GEORG PHILIPP TELEMANN – Overture-suite Burlesque de Quixotte, TWV 55:G10
MAURICE RAVEL – Vocal cycle Don Quichotte à Dulcinée, M. 84; String quartet in F major, M. 35

Musical programme focusing on the immortal theme of Don Quixote fills the ancient vaults of Trakai Castle. Composer Georg Philipp Telemann worked in Hamburg (Germany) at the junction of the 17th and 18th centuries and was, arguably, a cosmopolitan creator who absorbed the influence of pan-European styles. Knowledge of poetry by German and other European authors prompted him to create vocal and instrumental masterpieces. Among other gems of literature his library also included Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote, which inspired many of Telemann’s masterpieces: the serenade Don Quichotte auf der Hochzeit des Camacho (Don Quixote at Camacho’s Wedding, 1761), the overture-suite Burlesque de Quixotte. Don Quixote’iqueimpressions were carried further by Maurice Ravel, the famous 20th century French Impressionist. His cycle Don Quichotte à Dulcinée (also known as Three Songs of Don Quixote) exudes the mood of modern times – hidden sadness and the fear of inevitability as it was composed right after the composer recovered from the car crash and was still struggling with its consequences. This is the last work Ravel completed, in which he once again nostalgically revisited the Spanish theme so dear to him.

These seldom performed chamber music masterpieces and the colourful Ravel’s String quartet in F major are performed by the Vilnius Quartet and baritone Andrius Apšega. The singer is a laureate and prize-winner of many international competitions in Estonia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Ukraine, Russia and Portugal, as well as participant of various festivals. A soloist of Kaunas State Musical Theatre, Apšega was nominated for the Golden Stage Cross Award in the opera-operetta nomination. In 2016, he collaborated with the Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra and the Delos Productions record label: together with Dmitri Hvorostovsky and others, conducted by Konstantin Orbelian, he participated in the recording of Verdi’s Rigoletto. He also took part in the recording of Allegro io son, a CD featuring the well-known American tenor Lawrence Brownlee.
