PYOTR TCHAIKOVSKY – String sextet in D minor Souvenir de Florence, Op. 70
RICHARD GALLIANO – Opale concerto for accordion and string orchestra
ÁSTOR PIAZZOLLA – Libertango for accordion and strings

The closing concert of the Lithuanian National Philharmonic’s 80th and the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra’s 60th season offers works by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Richard Galliano  and Ástor Piazzolla performed by the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, accordionist Tadas Motiečius and conductor Robertas Šervenikas.

Currently pursuing active performing career, the young accordionist Tadas Motiečius studied at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre and the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Having started playing accordion at the age of ten, Motiečius today is a winner and diploma holder of many important international competitions in the Czech Republic, Latvia, Italy, Estonia, Poland, Belarus, and China. He has appeared at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, Klaipėda State Musical Theatre, the Baltic Chamber Opera Theatre and Vilnius Theatre Lėlė, as well as collaborated with State Choir Vilnius and innovative chamber, contemporary and jazz music projects.

The Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra will be conducted by Robertas Šervenikas, recipient of the Lithuanian National Culture and Art Prize. Maestro pays equal attention to opera, ballet and symphonic music, with a special emphasis on contemporary opuses. He is especially praised for the intensive and diverse creative activities ranging from the first performances of large-scale symphonic compositions by Lithuanian composers to distinctive and mature interpretations of contemporary and classical repertoire.

Pyotr Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) completed the String sextet in D minor in several months in the summer of 1890 and titled it Souvenir de Florence. He brought the idea for the work from his stay in Italy, but it took great effort for him to bring it to realization. Only a few years later, after making major revision, the composer dedicated the String sextet to the St. Petersburg Chamber Music Society. The premiere took place in Society’s hall on 25 November 1892 and was a great success. Souvenir de Florence is one of Tchaikovsky’s most beautiful chamber works.

Richard Galliano (b. 1960), French composer, and accordion and bandoneon virtuoso, is at home in a variety of music genres, from classical to jazz. His extraordinary talent is showcased in more than four hundred original or arranged songs and large-scale works that can be heard in concert halls, on television and as movie soundtracks around the world. Written in 1994, the three-movement Opale concerto for accordion and orchestra is based on the principles of modern music. Its musical vocabulary features alternating meter, contrasting dynamics, intriguing harmonic turns and twists.

The concert will close with a passion driven Libertango by Ástor Piazzolla. Music of the famous Argentine musician and composer Ástor Piazzolla (1921–1992), active at the second half of the 20th century, fundamentally changed traditional understanding of tango. He enriched this dance with elements of jazz and classical music. He is considered to be the father of the Nuevo Tango style. Piazzolla was also a great bandoneonist, performed his works with famous bands. In his homeland Argentina, he is known as El Gran Ástor.
