The direction of culture and art that unfolded in the 17th and 18th centuries eventually received a refined name of the Baroque era. But do we know what is the meaning of this intricate word? Indeed, the art of the time and, of course, the music attest to the meaning of Italian barocco – it is “strange”, “sophisticated”, “overly luxurious”. However, the Italian term is derived from the Portuguese barroco, which meant an “imperfect pearl”. Imperfect Pearl is the title the Lithuanian musicians (soprano Agnė Stančikaitė, pianist Vaiva Blažienė and guitarist Agnė Varanavičienė) have chosen for their programme consisting of works by three prominent Baroque representatives: Antonio Vivaldi, an Italian dubbed Red Priest, Georg Friedrich Händel, representing Germany and England, and Henry Purcell, an Englishman. This Sunday afternoon, baroque music will spread under the gothic vaults of the Trakai Castle Great Hall, which played a representative role during the period of the castle’s flourishing (honourable guests and merchants gathered here, foreign envoys were received).
