Three Portraits

Closing of the 6th Vilnius Piano Festival
2019 December 7, Saturday, 19.00
Lithuanian National Philharmonic Hall, Vilnius
Soloist GUODA GEDVILAITĖ (piano)
Conductor GEORG MARK (Austria)
Three Portraits

ROBERT SCHUMANN – Symphony No. 1 in B flat major, Op. 38 (Spring)
JOHANNES BRAHMS – Variations of a Theme by Haydn for orchestra, Op. 56
CLARA SCHUMANN – Concerto for piano and orchestra in A minor, Op. 7 (to mark the 200th birth anniversary of the composer-pianist)

The Festival’s closing concert will offer music by three romanticists – Clara and Robert Schumann, perchance the most renowned couple in music history, and their friend Brahms. The three musicians were close associates in life and music. Quite often Clara, Robert and Johannes called themselves ‘we three’.

Tonight the podium will be graced by Georg Mark, an Austrian baton master admired in Lithuania. Under his direction the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra will perform symphonic canvases by Robert Schumann and Brahms. Clara Schumann, primarily known as pianist and tonight introduced as a composer, will be the highlight of the concert. On occasion of her 200th birth anniversary, the Lithuanian pianist Guoda Gedvilaitė will perform Clara Schumann’s Concerto for piano and orchestra in A minor – an opus seldom programmed in concert halls. Always brimming with musical ideas, Gedvilaitė enjoys experimenting and pushing the boundaries of academic music performance practice. Her original programmes enchant with artistic flair and freedom; her stage partners embrace renowned academic music performers, actors, ballet dancers and jazz musicians.
