ANATOLIJUS ŠENDEROVAS - Adagio from the ballet Desdemona for cello and strings
DMITRY SHOSTAKOVICH – Concerto for cello and orchestra No. 2 in G major, Op. 126
SERGEJ RACHMANINOV – Symphonic Dances, Op. 45

In March 2019 we have lost Anatolijus Šenderovas, one of the most acclaimed Lithuanian composers. In his strikingly emotional and melodious music the composer employed solid dramaturgy, and, in some cases, the utmost radical modern expression means. One of such examples is his ballet Desdemona, which was voted to be the best stage work at the Lithuanian Composers’ Union competition. For seven years it was a repertoire production at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre and represented the Lithuanian ballet in Warsaw and Riga. Tonight’s programme features an excerpt from the ballet – Adagio for cello and strings. The cello part will be performed by David Geringas, the composer’s friend, a regular initiator and performer of his works. “What makes David Geringas exceptional and great among other cellists? He enchants with the beauty of tone, expedient expression and characteristic articulation falling in with the work’s architectonics. The range of timbres and rich nuances conform to the conception of the work. As a result, the listener feels no necessity to analyse neither stylistics, nor specific technological connotations. The interpretation convinces through the power of music itself”, wrote musicologist Rita Aleknaitė-Bieliauskienė about him in 2016 (Seven Decades with Music, “7 meno dienos”, 2016-09-30). Maestro Geringas will also perform Shostakovich’s Second Cello Concerto. Composed in 1966, it is often called ‘a symphony with cello solo’ due to its symphonic scope and conflicting nature. The cello part is not easy – it can be managed only by a virtuoso.

Russian conductor and pianist Yuri Serov will grace the podium. After completing his studies at the Rimsky-Korsakov Saint Petersburg State Conservatory, he furthered his education in Salzburg and Weimar. As a conductor, pianist, chamber musician and piano duo member Serov has toured in more than 30 countries, recorded sixty CDs for Russian, Belgian, Japanese and American labels. After intermission maestro Serov will lead the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra in Symphonic Dances, Op. 45: Rachmaninov’s last opus – a resume of his entire output.
