ARVO PÄRT – Fratres
PĒTERIS VASKS – String quartet No. 3
EDUARDAS BALSYS – String quartet (to mark the composer’s centenary)

Admired for its inventive programmes, the Čiurlionis Quartet presents music of the Baltic countries this time. In this programme Lithuania is represented by two renowned composers: Teisutis Makačinas and Eduardas Balsys. Teisutis Makačinas, a contemporary Lithuanian composer of academic and entertainment music, has celebrated his anniversary last year. Concerts dedicated to this occasion included his Reflection for string orchestra inspired by the motive from Juozas Naujalis’ In monte Oliveti. This afternoon, the audience will presented with its chamber ensemble version. The year 2019 is marked by the hundredth birth anniversary of Eduardas Balsys. The Quartet offers his only string quartet, an early composition generated, according to the composer, by “emotional thought”. Latvian music is represented by Pēteris Vasks, perchance the best-known Latvian composer (incidentally, a graduate of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre he played a double bass in the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra for three years). The concert programme offers his Third String quartet, displaying his idiosyncratic subtleness and spirituality. Estonian Arvo Pärt is the world’s most performed living composer. His breath-taking Fratres (Brothers) enjoys greatest popularity and is performed by various instrumental formations. Today the unique ‘tintinnabuli’ (little bells) sound will be rendered by the string quartet.
