Charles T. Griffes and William Bolcom are representatives of two different generations of American culture. Griffes has died from the flue complications at thirty-five on the rise of his promising career in 1920, leaving behind a bulk of works in diverse genres. Bolcom, a highly celebrated artist, composer and pianist, Professor at the Michigan University, will celebrate his seventieth anniversary next year. Among other works, his output includes a number of popular vocal pieces, dedicated to his wife and a well-known mezzo-soprano, Joan Morris.
