According to the cellist Mindaugas Bačkus, “Music by the two renowned romanticists, pianists and friends, Franz Liszt and Charles-Valentin Alkan, is often associated with transcendental virtuosity. But the mournful and elegiac character of their late works reflects their shared ideals, which lie in light expression and poetic vision of instrumental music. Chamber music in the work of both composers makes an exceptional domain, where spiritual and experimental tendencies take their source from rich literary, musical and religious culture.”

Dziady was Adam Mickiewicz’s most favoured work, which he wrote for ten years with interruptions and left unfinished. “And so there it is this gigantic mosaic, attesting to the poet’s titanic wrestle with earth and heavens – a mosaic that carries the imprints of history, romantic ideology, unrequited love and ideas of free nations. In short, the imprints of life.” (Justinas Marcinkevičius)
