Ąžuoliukas Celebrates its 60th birthday. The Light of Life

EDWARD ELGAR, Oratorio The Light of Life, Op. 29 for soloists, choir and orchestra

This concert season the Lithuanian choir community celebrates special anniversaries: 60th of the Ąžuoliukas boys and youth choir, 40th of the Vilnius Ąžuoliukas Music School! By forming the first boys’ choir in Lithuania in the Soviet era, the eminent choir leader Hermanas Perelšteinas confirmed that we already were a part of European culture, and were following the best examples of European boys’ and men’s choirs. For more than 40 years, Ąžuoliukas has been led by Vytautas Miškinis, Perelšteinas’ disciple, who maintains and cherishes the traditions of the collective. The choir, widely known outside Lithuania, is the winner of numerous international competitions and participant of various projects. It has accumulated a vast repertoire of songs, especially large-scale works performed with symphony orchestras.

During 40 years, the Vilnius Ąžuoliukas Music School, managed by Aušra Šikšnelienė, the headmaster of the school, has educated more than a thousand of choir singers. At the school, the students are provided with modern teaching aids, learn not only solfeggio or music history, attend group choir singing, voice training and conducting lessons, but also play the instruments of their choice. In addition to well-known conductors V. Miškinis, Povilas Gylys, Vaclovas Augustinas and Gintautas Venislovas, Ąžuoliukas family includes outstanding performers flutist Vytenis Gurstis, guitarist Saulius S. Lipčius, singers Kostas Smoriginas and Rafailas Karpis as well as other well-known Lithuanian musicians.

Founded a few years ago, the Ąžuolai Club men’s choir (artistic director and conductor Professor Povilas Gylys) brought together men (engineers, lawyers, teachers, doctors, architects, diplomats, economists) who have previously sung in Ąžuoliukas. The Ąžuolai Club men’s choir gives concerts and appears in festivals. It is the winner of international choir competitions in Lithuania and abroad.

The collectives will mark their anniversaries with Edward Elgar’s remarkably beautiful oratorio The Light of Life, Op. 29 for soloists, choir and orchestra, which extols sacred and human values, faith and spiritual light. The choirs will share the stage with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and the brightest constellation of soloists. The magnificent opus will be conducted by Professor V. Miškinis, the winner of the Government’s Culture and Art Prize, who has already become an Ąžuoliukas symbol.
