ONUTĖ NARBUTAITĖ – String quartet No. 2 Open the Gate of Oblivion
LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN – String quartet No. 12 in E flat major, Op. 127

Over the years, the Vilnius String Quartet has held various concert series; many of us remember Complete String Quartets by L. van Beethoven; Evenings of Romantic and Lithuanian Contemporary Music; Evenings of Chamber Music of the Countries of European Union; W. A. Mozart and Vienna; Quartet and Piano and others. This season, the Vilnius String Quartet is launching a new concert series Open the Gate of Oblivion, named after the first opus to be performed tonight – Onutė Narbutaitė’s Second string quartet. The concert is dedicated to the memory of Ludwig van Beethoven and Ona Narbutienė.

Prominent musicologist, cultural figure, recipient of the Lithuanian National Prize O. Narbutienė would have turned 90 this year, unfortunately, she has not been among us for 13 years. Narbutienė was a loyal friend and collaborator of the Vilnius String Quartet. She inspired and hosted many of the Quartet’s concerts. “Collaboration with Onutė is the best and most memorable page in our creative biography” says Augustinas Vasiliauskas, a long-time cellist of the quartet.

“The imagery of this music is tragically lyrical. A one-movement opus is based on minimal sound resources. The polyphonic fabric is transparent, every sound is heard. The dramaturgy of the work is clear-cut, based on the comparison of active and passive beginnings”, Rūta Gaidamavičiūtė described O. Narbutaitė’s Second string quartet composed in 1980. Beethoven’s String quartet No. 12, completed and performed in 1825, is one of his largest and most striking works of this genre.
