The Lithuanian National Philharmonic Digital Hall invites the audience to listen to Georges Bizet–Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite. The composer himself called his opus, written in 1967, “Bizet music’s free transcription for strings and percussion”. The colourful Suite will be performed by the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra (LCO) led by Sergej Krylov and Giunter Percussion Ensemble.

There are quite a few examples in the history of music when composers, taking on another composer’s theme or the whole piece, have created a new work that is far removed from the original source. In works of this kind, the original is fundamentally altered (especially the instrumentation), but the main ideas and general structure do not change. There are other cases of adopting the thematic material, when individual quotations or even large fragments of famous works are incorporated into the original musical text. Both trends are showcased in Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite.

The Suite consists of thirteen numbers, united by a single dramaturgical thought. Shchedrin’s instrumentation lends Bizet’s music extraordinary expressiveness. The masterfully highlighted melodic line makes the work especially choreographic. The leitemotion that runs throughout the Suite saturates the music with passion, verve and tragic tension.
