ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK – String quartet No. 12 (American), Op. 96 / B.179
HEITOR VILLA-LOBOS – String quartet No. 6 (Brazilian), W399

Admired for its intriguing programmes Čiurlionis Quartet, a recipient of the Lithuanian National Prize, offers a programme associated with a distant continent of America. The programme includes Czech and Brazil composers. The audience will be presented with the String quartet by the foremost Czech composer Dvořák. Akin to the composer’s other opuses this work is part of the world’s golden treasury of music. Dvořák spent three years in the USA serving as a director of the newly established National Conservatoire in New York. In 1893, in addition to his renowned Symphony No. 9 From the New World he composed one more masterpiece – String quartet, No. 12 in F major, Op. 96, known as American. Dvořák was fascinated with aboriginal American music – the String quartet showcases the colours of American folklore and jazz seated in characteristically complex Dvořákian texture.

Heitor Villa-Lobos, most known as a composer of the magical Bachianas Brasileiras, is the most known Brazilian and for that matter South American composer. He has written works of various genres, showcasing elements of Brazilian folklore as well as impressionist flavours. His melodious Brazilian string quartet No. 6 is brimming with graceful dance rhythms and melancholic lyricism.
