About Mother Goose, Petia and Wolf

MAURICE RAVEL – Orchestral suite Ma mère l'oye
SERGEI PROKOFIEV – Symphonic fairy tale Peter and the Wolf

“Ravel got inspiration for these five pieces from the fairy-tales by the 17th–18th c. French writers. The composer admitted that he sought to reflect upon the world of childhood. Indeed, the composer as if a magician opens the gates of the magical music castle where the fairy-tale characters live. I presume you know them?” conductor Robertas Šervenikas, a recipient of the Lithuanian National Prize, asks the little listeners.

The movements of the orchestral suite Ma mère l'oye will remind the listeners of the fairy-tale characters:

Pavane de la Belle au Bois Dormant / Pavane of Sleeping Beauty
Petit Poucet / Little Tom Thumb
Laideronnette, impératrice des pagodes / Little Ugly Girl, Empress of the Pagodas
Les Entretiens de la Belle et de la Bête / Conversation of Beauty and the Beast
Le Jardin féerique / The Fairy Garden

Our second piece is a symphonic fairy-tale Peter and the Wolfby Prokofiev. The composer wrote an interesting story and charming music in which different instruments of the orchestra personify the characters: each of them is characterized by an individual musical theme”, proceeds the conductor. “While the fairy-tale will by narrated by actor Rolandas Kazlas.”

Curiously, this piece has been performed and recorded by orchestras and conductors around the globe, its text has been voiced by celebrated actors for almost 80 years. And its start was very ordinary: a director of one children theatre asked Prokofiev, at the time already a well known composer, to write a piece that would help children to better acquaint with the instruments of an orchestra.
