Music of the New Age. 1st half of the 20th century

RALF VAUGHAN WILLIAMS – String quartet No. 1 in G minor
ERICH WOLFGANG KORNGOLD – Piano quintet in E major, Op. 15

In western periodization the New Age starts after the WWI (some sources start with the French Revolution) and lasts until the end of the WWII (other sources extend it to this day). In a wide cultural panorama of the first half of the 20th century, marked by dramatic turns of history, musical creation is imprinted with the stylistic and technological transformations enlisting composers yet hardly known to Lithuanian audience. Čiurlionis Quartet, the recipient of the Lithuanian National Culture and Art Prize, fills this gap. This time the Quartet introduces Ralph Vaughan Williams, composer of symphonies, several operas and ballets, significant chamber opuses. According to musicologists, his eloquent and expressive music is the quintessence of English music tradition. The programme also features Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Austro-Hungarian by birth and of Jewish heritage, born in Brno (Moravia). He spent the largest part of his life in the USA, where he became famous as the composer of music for Hollywood as well as operas, chamber and symphonic opuses.

In Korngold’s Piano quintet Čiurlionis Quartet collaborates with Gryta Tatorytė, a talented younger generation pianist who has appeared in such festivals as Schleswig-Holstein (Germany), Michel Sogny (Switzerland) and Pianistit Tunturissa (Lapland), and earned prizes in international competitions in Lithuania, France, Germany and Italy. In Vilnius Festival 2014, Tatorytė premiered Concerto for piano and orchestra by Gintaras Sodeika.
