Čiurlionis Quartet, a recipient of the Lithuanian National Prize, is admired for delivering programmes centred on interesting themes that reflect musical events of Lithuania and various countries. The Quartet is credited for revival of forgotten compositions and introduction of the newest opuses. The musicians opened Kristijonas Donelaitis’ Year with Lithuanian premieres, presented concert cycles dedicated to Brahms and Bartók, gave monographic concerts of woks by Čiurlionis, Mozart, Shostakovich, Schubert and Schumann as well as Latin American and contemporary Lithuanian composers. This time the Quartet offers Letters from Argentina allowing to indulge in works of the foremost Argentinean composers Alberto Ginastera (observing his 100th birth anniversary), Astor Piazzolla and Carlos Gardel, and also rhythms and melodies of the passionate tango. Čiurlionis Quartet shares the stage with Kazys Stonkus, one of Lithuania’s most acclaimed accordionists. A member of several international collectives (European, Asian, Russia, Latin American), he is at home in classical and contemporary repertoire, also is known as a composer and jazz improviser, collaborating with artists, actors, poets and writers. Stonkus is the President of the Lithuanian National Accordionists’ Union, a member of the CIA (Confederation Internationale Des Accordeonistes – the member of the International Music Council (IMC), which is the largest non-governmental division of UNESCO), and CMA (Confederation Mondiale de l’Accordeon).
