ROBERT SCHUMANN – String quartet No. 1 in A minor, Op. 41 No. 1
ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK – Piano quintet in A major, Op. 81

Čiurlionis Quartet, a recipient of the Lithuanian National Prize, is admired for its resourcefulness and technical mastery. Cellist Saulius Lipčius, celebrating his 70th birth and 50th creative anniversaries this year, has played in the Quartet since its inauguration in 1968. With the collective he has appeared in the world’s most important concert halls from Iceland to Japan and China, Great Britain to the USA, performed in EXPO Aichi in Japan and MIDEM 2005 in France, took part in prestigious festivals such as “Prague Spring”, Schleswig-Holstein, “Europamusikale”, “Amadeo” (Zagreb) and St. Magnus (Great Britain) among others. Last year the Quartet paid tribute to Michał Kleofas Ogiński in concerts in Lithuania and Italy, performed a programme of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis’ works for the opening of the season of Lithuanian Culture in Krakow on occasion of the 25th anniversary of Restoration of Lithuania’s Independence.

Čiurlionis Quartet collaborates with various musicians. Tonight it shares the stage with Petras Geniušas, a well-known pianist praised for original ideas, a regular participant of various festivals and modern projects, as well as mixed media events. The pianist teams up with the Quartet in one of the most consummate chamber works – Antonín Dvořák’s Piano quintet in A major, Op. 81, saturated with Czech folk song and dance intonations, colour and romantic flair. Dedicated to cellist Saulius Lipčius’ anniversaries the concert programme features M.K. Čiurlionis’ String quartet, the first Lithuanian opus of the genre, and Schumann’s String quartet No 1 in A minor, Op. 41, No 1 showcasing the Viennese classicists’ influence ingeniously combined with rich and impressive romantic gestures.
