The 4th Vilnius Piano Festival Presents Unprecedented Tandems

Lovers of piano music may rejoice – the 4th Vilnius Piano Festival will take place on November 14-28. Devised by its artistic director Mūza Rubackytė, each festival has offered lasting impressions. This year the festival titled Tandems invites the listeners to eight piano music events.

Held every second year, from its very beginning the piano music forum has cherished the mission to present to the Lithuanian audience to leading personalities of the piano world, to showcase the paramount level of piano mastership and the experience of diverse piano schools. The festival is led by its artistic director Mūza Rubackytė, the winner of International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in Budapest and the recipient of the Lithuanian National Culture and Arts Prize. She ambitiously strives for the highest artistic quality of the festival and is demanding towards the making of its programmes. Each festival is devoted to certain topical issues or events of the time:  the first Vilnius Piano Festival was held in the autumn of 2009 and it became part of the festivities related to the millennium of the first historical mention of Lithuania’s name. The 2011 festival was dedicated to music by Hungarian composer Franz Liszt and the centenary of death of Lithuanian artist Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. In 2013 the festival presented concert series titled Touched by the Muses and celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki. This year’s festival is titled Tandems and it focuses on creative partnerships between musicians, as well as tandems of pianists and instruments.

“Solitude is part of the pianist‘s life. Alone we work, travel and perform. Following the Third Festival that was devoted to women, the Fourth Vilnius Piano Festival is all about creative tandems. The audience will have an opportunity to hear duets of brothers, spouses, long-term stage partners or former competitors, presently performing as colleagues. Especially for the occasion and for the first time in Lithuania two new concert pianos Steingraeber & Söhne have been brought to Vilnius from Bayreuth. Thus, the concord and cohesiveness of music interpretations presented by the pianists will be further aided by the tandem of instruments.  I hope this consonant accord of multiple keys will bring us all the fulfilment and spiritual harmony”, says the artistic director of the festival.

The festival will present seven musical tandems. The programme features the Kutrowatz brothers piano duo (Austria), wife and husband duo of Edita Klukon and Dezsö Ránki (Hungary), the Grau Schumacher Piano Duo (Germany), recent winners of the Franz Liszt Competition in Utrecht Mariam Matsashvili (Georgia) and Peter Klim (USA), as well as Lithuanian pianists Kristina Annamukhamedova and Morta Grigaliūnaitė, performers raised by the Mstislav Rostropovich Foundation who are currently studying abroad. Mūza Rubackytė herself will share the stage with her long-term stage partner, conductor Stefan Lano and pianist Anahit Nersesyan from Armenia, meeting the latter again after 20 years. The festival will close with a concert of the Kremerata Baltica Orchestra and pianist Mikhail Pletniov. Other orchestras to appear at a festival are the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra.

The concert programme for the Festival will be extended by an educational event – a lecture by the heir of the Steingraeber family Udo Steingraeber, titled Liszt and Wagner in Bayreuth: the World’s Oldest Festival. The lecture will take place at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre.

All concerts of the Festival will take place at the Grand Hall of the Lithuanian National Philharmnic Society.
