The Seasons

Works by Antonio Vivaldi

On the last Sunday of April in Trakai Castle Musica humana Chamber Ensemble invites to the concert The Seasons featuring works by Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741). Born into a family of a violinist of cappella of St Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Antonio received a twofold education – studied to become a priest and musician (Italian music lovers affectionately nicknamed him Il Prete Rosso (The Red Priest). At a very early age he made his name as a violin virtuoso, soon becoming famous as maestro di violin, maestro di cappella, maestro de' concerti (music director) at the Conservatorio Ospedale della Pietà, and exceptionally productive composer.

Le quattro stagioni (The Four Seasons) for violin and chamber orchestra, composed in 1723, is among his most popular works. Written in a traditional three-movement form, the cycle showcases lucid and expressive melodies, swift and energetic rhythm. The concert programme also offers Vivaldi’s sinfonias, Concerto for flute, oboe and strings in C major as well as arias from operas and oratorios.
