The year of 2011 marks the death centenary of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875 09 22–1911 04 10). The multifarious creative search of this Lithuanian composer and artist keeps astonishing the world to this day, his art reflecting diverse and rich cultural context of the beginning of the 20th century – Čiurlionis’ environment while living in Lithuania, Poland, Germany and Russia. In Warsaw and Leipzig he studied composition, later he returned to Warsaw to study painting, and also spent some time in Saint Petersburg. During his study years in Leipzig he composed his only String Quartet, which will be performed by the Vilnius String Quartet in the opening concert of the Music in Trakai Castle series. Vytautas Giedraitis will join the Quartet in German romanticist Weber’s virtuoso Clarinet Quintet, which is considered to be a great challenge for the solo instrument. The concert will be crowned with the sophisticated Quartet by baroque composer Boccherini.
