Sunday afternoon programme Beloved Women of King Mindaugas transfers the audience to the historic times of King Mindaugas. Čiurlionis Quartet, dancers of the Early Music and Dance Company Festa cortese and actor Vytautas Rumšas depict the world of olden days with its deities and insightful oracles, relate the prophesies dreamt about by three wives of King Mindaugas – Tautvilė (the invented name without historical references), Morta and Daumantienė. The programme offers a glimpse of the court life, family traditions and customs, pagan fests and rituals. Ritual dances, pagan chants and monologues evoke important events such as wedding rites, baptism and coronation of King Mindaugas. The King is represented not as a cruel medieval ruler and smart politician, but rather a father and husband heedful of the charms of the feminine beauty.

This programme is based on V.M. Knabikaitė’s historic novel Gulbės sparnu palytėtos (Touched by the Swan’s Wing, published by Lithuanian Writers’ Union) and J. Marcinkevičius’ drama Mindaugas.
