Three virtuosos – Džeraldas Bidva (violin), Donatas Bagurskas (double bass) and Kristina Žebrauskaitė (accordion) – have designed a new intriguing programme Tango ballet. In it the musicians endeavour to combine the tango and ballet music, passionate rhythms and melodies as well as the expression of movement. The programme features trio arrangements made by its members of fragments of Stravinsky’s ballets (Pulcinella and Apollon Musagete), Prokofiev’s 8 dramatic pieces from the ballet Romeo and Juliet, Glier’s piece Huit marceaux for violin and cello, Op. 39 (arranged for double bass by Bagurskas). Indeed, the musicians could not sidestep the tango king Astor Piazzolla distinctly admired in Lithuania (Tango ballet, Escualo, Café 1930, etc).

Another highlight of the programme is Frozen River Flows for violin, accordion and double bass by Dobrinka Tabakova, a young composer of Bulgarian heritage residing in London. Last year the opus was recorded in Vilnius and included in the composer’s personal CD nominated for the prestigious Grammy. “Surprisingly original and rare music”, John Adams, the celebrity of American postmodernism, commented on Tabakova’s music. Rhythmic specifics, haunting melodies and rich orchestration form her musical vocabulary, while her unusual ideas move both performers and listeners.

Violinist Džeraldas Bidva is the principal violin of the well-known Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra; he also takes part in various chamber music projects in Lithuania and abroad. The double bassist Donatas Bagurskas appears as a soloist with different orchestras, teams up with 4Tango. Accordionist Kristina Žebrauskaitė is known as the founder, leader and member of 4Tango. Several years ago together with Eduard Gimenez, a tango promulgator in Lithuania, she formed Tanguedia ensemble; garnered acclaim in international tango projects.
