Musica mechanica with the Čiurlionis Quartet

Performers:

ČIURLIONIS QUARTET

Programme: works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Stewe Reich

The title is truly intriguing – Musica mechanica. What is it? Members of Čiurlionis Quartet share their thoughts: “ Music surrounds us all the time. It reaches us from the mobile phones, TV screens and CD players. That is recorded music. However, several centuries ago music, which was not performed live, could have only been played from mechanical instruments. A number of composers including Bach, Mozart and Haydn wrote compositions for these instruments. Today we will perform works meant for musical boxes, watches, mechanical organs and other instruments; discuss the differences between live and recorded music.”
