Programme: works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Antonio Vivaldi

On a second day of Easter, the festival’s closing concert features works by J.S. Bach, A. Vivaldi and Johann Sebastian’s son Johann Christian Bach. The festival will be crowned by St. Mark Passion, composed in Leipzig in 1731, where Bach served as a cantor of St. Thomas Church. As a tradition, passion was performed on Good Friday. Bach composed five passions, however only two of them are extant – St. John Passion and St. Matthew Passion. Bach wrote St. Mark Passion as a parody, i.e. recycled movements from other pre-existing works. Though Bach’s music is lost, the opus was reconstructed after still extant libretto by Picander.
