Programme: works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi

The festival’s fifth concert presents a meeting of two baroque geniuses – Johann Sebastian Bach and Antonio Vivaldi. Programme features Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No 3 in G major, Vivaldi’s cantata Nisi Dominus and Concerto for two oboes, as well as Bach’s secular cantata Mer hahn en neue Oberkeet. The secular cantatas, which the composer called musical dramas, were written to mark important occasions (anniversaries and birthdays of kings and other noblemen, various events of the University and the School of St. Thomas Church). Only 20 of them have reached our times. They are considered to be examples of a ‘lighter’ genre, where Bach experimented with the new gallant style. This cantata, also called Peasant, based on folk tunes and employing a certain folk dialect, is a cheerful greeting to one nobleman.
