The Oratorio was premiered in Leipzig on April 1st 1725 (at the time Bach served as a cantor of St Thomas Church). During that period he composed his most important vocal-instrumental works: all passions, Mass in B minor, Christmas Oratorio, etc. At the end of his days Bach has said: “My talent and all of my music is dedicated to God”.
