Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra Summer Series

In the beginning of August, the Night Serenades will return, for the 44th time, to Palanga, one of the most beautiful seaside resorts on the Baltic coast. The annual series of outdoor concerts presented by the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra (LCO) on the terrace of the Palanga Amber Museum has become a prominent gathering place for classical musicians and music lovers in the beautiful surroundings of the museum’s botanical gardens, ever since the first event was organised here by the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society in 1971.

The neo-Renaissance palace in the vicinity of the Baltic sea, built for the family of Count Felix Tyszkiewicz at the end of the 19th century, and spectacular gardens designed by the then famous French landscape architect and horticulturalist Édouard François André make up a delightful backdrop to the performances of classical masterpieces, which attract not only numerous visitors and holidaymakers, but also internationally acclaimed musicians from all over the world.

During the forty-four years of its existence, the Night Serenades featured an illustrious roster of national and international musicians who have shared the stage with the festival’s resident Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, including violinists Gidon Kremer, Sergej Krylov, Oleg Kagan, Tatiana Grindenko, Susanna Yoko Henkel and Vilhelmas Čepinskis; violist Maxim Rysanov; cellists Natalia Gutman, Karine Georgian, Mark Drobinsky, Vytautas Sondeckis and Denis Shapovalov; flautist Sefika Kutluer; clarinettist Eddy Vanoosthuyse; and trumpeter Andrei Kavalinsky, among many others.

The festival was conceived and achieved wide renown thanks the initiative and effort of Prof. Saulius Sondeckis, a founding artistic director and conductor of the LCO. The Orchestra currently continues this lasting tradition of organising summer concert series in Palanga under the leadership of its new artistic director and conductor, violinist Sergej Krylov, whose artistic goals successfully combine respectful relationship towards traditions and daring exploration of innovative ideas in terms of repertoire and programming.

Listening to magnificent classics performed by the LCO together with the star-studded lineup of guest soloists for the forty-fourth season in a row, in the alfresco setting of the palace’s southern terrace overlooking the rose garden, has turned into something of a local custom. It has retained the authentic spirit and aura of a living tradition, which has been continuously shaped not only by the orchestra musicians, soloists, conductors and the most refined music they performed but also by the place itself and each and every member of the audience.

For its 44th series of the Night Serenades the LCO will team up with conductors Juozas Domarkas, Adrija Čepaitė and Modestas Barkauskas, renowned Lithuanian classical and jazz musicians, including saxophonist Petras Vyšniauskas, cellist Mindaugas Bačkus, singers Raminta Vaicekauskaitė and Liudas Mikalauskas, and a guest soloist – young Russian violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky.

As if taking inspiration from the neo-Classical features of the Tyszkiewicz palace, the LCO usually programs classical works that resonate with the place and time and thus may be termed as ‘little night music’. This year the festival offers four nights of convivial musical moods that get intertwined in a polyphonic patchwork of works from distinct stylistic epochs, ranging from Baroque to contemporary music.
