Programme
J. S. Bach and A. Vivaldi

Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi

The Festival’s second programme features instrumental and vocal music by two baroque patriarchs: Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) and Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741). Assumedly, Bach never met the Venetian “il Prete Rosso” or "the Red Priest", but his concertos had great influence on Bach. Vivaldi had made his name as a violin virtuoso in his early years. Soon he became maestro di violino (master of violin), later maestro di cappella (orchestra conductor) and maestro de' concerti (music director), served as the head of the conservatoire and was extremely productive as a composer: wrote both sacred and secular music. He was associated with the courts of the Pope, the King of France and the Elector of Saxony. He died in Vienna. Bach had a strong foundation of family tradition of several generations; sacred music was his alpha and omega; he never left Germany. It is difficult to point out any compositional method that is not represented in Bach’s music. It combines various baroque music styles stemming from Italy, France and Germany.
