When the Double Bass is Soloing

ARMANDO TROVAJOLI – Suite for double bass and orchestra Sconcerto (dedicated to the composer’s centenary)
FRANZ SCHUBERT – Symphony No. 9 in C major (The Great), D. 944

It would seem difficult to imagine such an imposing instrument like the double bass playing the main role and performing a solo part. According to music critics, in the hands of Donatas Bagurskas this gigantic instrument sounds delicately and tenderly. The listeners will have chance to get convinced in that at the symphonic music concert where together with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra led by Maestro Kai Bumann the Lithuanian double bassist will perform Sconcerto, the suite for double bass and orchestra by the 20th-century composer Armand Trovajoli.

The concert also features Schubert’s last completed symphony No 9 (he did not finish his 10th symphony). Schubert composed it in 1828, however the opus was premiered only ten years later on the initiative of Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. Dominated by exquisite melodies and compelling poetic images the Ninth Symphony embodies Austria’s nature, folk legends and “romantics of the forest”.
