The Universe of J. S. Bach’s Music IV

Works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach

In the fourth programme of The Universe of J. S. Bach’s Music concert series Musica humana ensemble continues its musical journey with music by J. S. Bach and his son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.

J. S. Bach was married twice and had 20 children many of whom died as toddlers. His four sons followed in father’s footsteps to become composers. C. Ph. E. Bach was one of the most influential composers of his generation. He served as a harpsichordist in Potsdam court of Frederick the Great of Prussia, later became the music director (Kapellmeister) at Hamburg. At the time his music was admired much more ardently than his father’s (as we know, Johann Sebastian’s music was resuscitated only in the middle of the 19th c.). C. Ph. E. Bach composed oratorios, symphonies and concertos. His expressive style known as ‘sensitive style’ (empfindsamer Stil) influenced the work of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.
