LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN – Concerto for violin and orchestra in D major, Op. 61

LAURYNAS VAKARIS LOPAS – The Way of the Cross

FRANCIS POULENC – Stabat materfor soprano, choir and orchestra, FP 148

The spine of this symphonic music concert is a theme of solemnity, which quite often turns to be composers’ creative source and search for contemplation in the art of sound. French composer Poulenc, a member of Les Six, toyed with a variety of genres from mono-opera and ballet music to vocal miniature. Viewing art as entertainment he did not restrain from burlesque, grotesque, pastiche, subtle humour and even tender jibe. However, in 1935 Poulenc turned to church music and romance. In 1950, he wrote Stabat mater in response to the death of his friend, artist Christian Bérard.

Lithuanian composer Laurynas Vakaris Lopas’ symphonic canvas The Way of the Cross is also submerged in musical contemplation. Its all-pervasive four-note motive refers to BACH theme. The musicians will present its new version involving soloist (Dovilė Kazonaitė) and choir (Kaunas State Choir).

Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major is a repertoire fixture of almost every violinist. Under the baton of Modestas Pitrėnas the LNSO will collaborate with Norwegian violinist Mari Samuelsen. She also enjoys appearing on pop music scene.     Her album Nordic Noir, released in September 2017, went straight to top of Norwegian pop chart (2nd place).  Samuelsen plays the impressive ‘Duke of Edinburgh’ Stradivarius 1724.
