LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN – Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125

Šiauliai boasts an annual Easter music festival Resurrexit organised by Šiauliai State Choir Polifonija. Held during Easter week this year’s festival programme includes performance of Beethoven’s monumental Ninth Symphony at Šiauliai Cathedral of the Apostles St Peter and Paul. Impressive performing forces involve Lithuanian soloists, symphony orchestra and three choirs. Like Homer’s poems, Dante’s Divine Comedy, Raphael’s The Sistine Madonna, Goethe’s Faust or Bach’s Mass in B minor, this symphony stands among a few examples in the world art panorama, which akin to the highest mountain peaks rises above everything that human genius has created. While still in adolescent years fascinated by the image of the French Revolution Beethoven made up his mind to compose music to Schiller’s Ode to Joy. Thus it could be argued that the composer was maturing this symphony throughout his entire life. It is a result of his long lasting creative venture that took shape in 1824.
