Richard Strauss’ Don Quixote, Fantastic Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character (Op. 35), demands not only utmost professionalism from an enlarged symphony orchestra, but also virtuoso abilities of the soloists.

The cello part will be performed by Arto Noras – one of Finland’s most internationally acclaimed cellists. He became known internationally after winning the second prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1966). From then on, Noras has performed with the world’s leading orchestras and conductors and mastered a repertoire that currently encompasses the entire bulk of works for cello. As a chamber musician, he partners the foremost musicians of today. Lithuanian violist Arūnas Statkus will keep him company at the concert in Vilnius.

In the second half of the programme, Modestas Pitrėnas will conduct Dvořák’s last and most popular symphony, captivating the audiences with enchanting ‘native’ American melodies and a longing for distant homeland.
