Mstislav Rostropovich hailed Denis Shapovalov, the gold medallist of the International Piotr Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow (1998), as an extraordinary talent endowed with noble passion. In 2001, Denis won the Web Concert Hall International Competition held in New York and took part in Rostropovich’s 75th anniversary series in the UK and the US, in 2002. In 2005, for his CD Cello Masterpieces Shapovalov was awarded the Russian Artists Foundation Prize. The young cellist collaborates with the world’s leading orchestras such as Russian, London, Bavarian Radio and Tokyo, under the celebrated conductors Yuri Bashmet, Vladimir Spivakov, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Lorin Maazel, and Jukka-Pekka Saraste. Together with Vadim Repin, Pavel Berman and Alexei Liubimov, he appeared at major concert halls in Europe, America and Japan.
