Gabrielius Alekna’s every concert in Lithuania is greatly anticipated by all music lovers. Having graduated from the M. K. Čiurlionis National School of Arts he continued his studies under Prof. Liucija Drąsutienė at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. In 1996, he was invited to further his education at the Juilliard School in New York, where he earned Bachelor and Master degrees under the tutelage of Prof. Jerome Lowenthall. In 2006, he was the first Lithuanian to hold a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Juilliard School. Alekna has garnered top prizes in fourteen international competitions. Since 2011, he has been teaching as a Visiting Associate Professor at the Music Academy of Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas. The same year he held a recital tour of ten U.S. and Canadian cities in celebration of the 100-year anniversary of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. The pianist has given recitals in world’s prestigious concert halls, recorded several CDs of Lithuanian music. His recorded concerto performances were broadcast on the BBC, Österreich 1, and EuroClassic radio programs in twelve European countries, while in the U.S. he was heard on WQXR (New York) and on XM satellite radio (Channel 113). This afternoon the pianist collaborates with Čiurlionis Quartet, a recipient of the Lithuanian National Prize actively performing for over forty years. Following its debut at the Royal Festival Hall in London, the reviewer of Musical Opinion, the Britain’s oldest classical music magazine, wrote about the Quartet’s exquisite interpretation of music, “proving to be a timely reminder to chamber music lovers in London of what genuine quartet playing should be.” This time Čiurlionis Quartet presents a Lithuanian premiere of Pernambuco by Rodney Rogers, an American composer, and teams up with Alekna in Piano quintet No 2 by Grażyna Bacewicz, Polish composer of Lithuanian heritage, and Antonín Dvořák’s Piano quintet in A major saturated with Czech national flavour.
