Moniuszko 200. Four Litanies of Ostra Brama

STANISŁAW MONIUSZKO – Four Litanies of Ostra Brama for soloists, choir and orchestra

This concert is dedicated to Polish composer Stanisław Moniuszko’s 200th birth anniversary. Closely associated with Lithuanian capital, the 19th-century composer Moniuszko wrote his most significant works in Vilnius, where he settled after marryingAleksandra Müller. It was in Vilnius in 1848 that he staged and conducted the first performance of his most famous opera Halka (Warsaw produced his opera ten years later, in 1858).

It is symbolic and meaningful that this year’s Vilnius Festival presentsMoniuszko’s Four Litaniesof Ostra Brama under the domes of St. Johns’ Church, where the composer served as an organist in 1840–1842. The Lithuanian, Latvian and Polish performing forces present this fragile music on the Day of Mourning and Hope. “Like a pure and rapid stream falls into deep sea, so the creative work of the young singer Vera Talerko is growing stronger… Her swift musical memory, pure intonation, the beautiful timbre of her voice with its individuality, the wide diapason as well as the attractiveness and artistic gift of the singer…” music critics describe singer Vera Talerko. Born in Daugavpils, she felt that singing was her mission already as a child. Vilnius Festival also introduces Ewa Wolak, a Polish mezzo-soprano possessing a voice with huge range and easiness. She is at home with Händel’s coloraturas as well as Verdi and Wagner’s alto roles. Polish tenor Rafał Bartmiński is the second prize winner at the International Stanisław Moniuszko Vocal Competition. In 2012, the authoritative British weekly Spectator included Bartmiński into the list of the best six opera singers. Lithuanian bass Liudas Mikalauskas is tonight’s fourth soloist. The impressive quartet of soloists shares the stage with Kaunas State Choir and the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra. This magnificent assembly of performers is led by the legendary Polish Maestro Antoni Wit, the winner of Grammy Award 2012 for recordings of Penderecki’s music. In fact, the conductor was nominated for this prestigious award five times!
